Turn-Based RPGs Still Work On A Phone
There's a lazy assumption that phones killed the turn-based RPG. Playing Emberfall Chronicles reminded me that the opposite is true — a game you can pick up, take three careful turns, and put down is almost perfectly suited to how we actually use our phones.
The trick is telegraphing. When every enemy shows its intent a turn ahead, you can make real decisions in a fifteen-second burst on a train platform. No twitch reflexes, no penalty for stepping away.
I ended up building my party around a defensive anchor and two burst damage dealers, which let me survive the surprise second wave in most fights. Experiment early before the skill grid locks you in.
If you've been missing this genre on mobile, it's back, and it's better suited to the platform than it ever was on a controller.
